A Woman’s Role, Part I

Emily: I don’t like any of your jobs.
Me: Me neither.

Dear Sister,

God works in mysterious and wonderful ways.  As I pause here for a few moments to reflect on my life’s journey, it amazes me how, ironically, my professional career finally recently resolved a longstanding, 20 year conflict between God and I:  gender roles.

I distinctly remember many moments of my girlhood (and young womanhood), when I was quite literally consumed with anger and bitterness at the unfairness of a woman’s role in society and the family.  I carefully observed the older women in my life work full-time jobs alongside their husbands, and then come home from work to what amounted to a second full-time job, as their husbands stretched out in recliners in front of the television or pursued their own interests.

I also remember reading and re-reading certain biblical passages, looking for loopholes, and finally rebelliously determining that I would just be a Christian who chose to disregard certain verses in the bible.

I refused to allow that “submit” word to be in my wedding vows.

I ran from the traditional image of a Christian wife and mother with passion and fervor.  I would NEVER be one of those women I watched as a child!!  I was INDEPENDENT!  I was EQUAL!!  And I would be treated that way!

As I read back through what I just wrote, I noticed how many times in the last few paragraphs I used the word “I”, and I counted the cost of that mindset to my marriage, my family, my relationship with my Creator, and finally, my own health and happiness.

What “I” really needed was an attitude adjustment.  I’ll explain how that happened, and the tenderness with which it was administered, in my next letter.

Love,

Christina
